Invisible Man Themes and Connections
Themes:
1.) Ambition
~The narrator admires Dr. Bledsoe, this makes the narrators ambition to one day serve as his assistant. However, his ambition is thwarted because of the white community he resides in. As they dominate society, he is faced with challenges that may not go his way until he is able to surpass the limits of his own self.
2.) Racism and its Obstacles
~ Ralph Ellisons "Invisible Man" is a novel that surrounds racism, I found that the narrator faces these issues constantly yet finds different experience through it. In addition, the obstacles he faces with racism is not only outwardly but as well internally as he believes his identity is defined by his race, which leads him to his 'invisibility.'
3.) Identity
~ The narrator and his identity are two things that oddly do not mix. His belief in his invisibility comes from his race, to which he believes causes his nameless and invisible persona.
Connections:
"I, Too"
#1) I believe the theme of ambition can be associated with this poem because the narrator was forced into a place where he simply did not want to be. However, near the end of the poem he is able to face his ambition by eating where the other men are. His ambition being to be treated as an equal person.
#2) The theme of race fits well with this poem as he is faced with an obstacle because of his race, unable to do and go where he pleases. Unable to be someone who can be considered as one of the people who are able to laugh proudly and sit at the table.
#3) The narrator in the poem is able to use his race and his identity to overcome and strengthen his statement and actions.
"Refugee in America"
#1) The ambition here is the narrators wish to live a life of freedom, away from the people who 'own' him and live over his life.
#2) The narrator is unable to face freedom due to his race, in addition he faces a different standpoint from those around him as well as different obstacles.
#3) In the poem, the narrator is able to use his identity to state what he goes through in life, what he faces compared to those around him. He wants to be justified.
