The Color Purple: Overview

The Color Purple was a great novel to read, it was influential in past and current times and was able to give insight to a time where things were not the best. For women and those of color, this novel I believe holds a place in them. It showed how women can become strong and hold the confidence they are able to achieve without a man or without being held to be a certain way and for those of color that things are achievable, even in times of hardship. Portraying a man, in this novel- violent, neglectful, full of themselves- I believe gave insight to what can pull a woman down into a mindset like Celie, but when compared to the man Shug 'marries'- where it is supported. In addition, how Celie and Shug held a relationship, one that was wrong for their time and possibly sinful was exciting. All of these aspects in the novel are what made me like it overall; it was nice to see that a character like Celie was able to achieve happiness as well.
